David Ortiz

BIG PAPI - We all know what he is capable of, so the question for fantasy players to ask themselves right now is.........Is David Ortiz the buy-low candidate of the year right now? It is a difficult question to answer for sure.
One one hand, I want to say that there is absolutely no chance of Big Papi hitting only 9 homeruns this year, which is what he is currently on pace for. Furthermore, 2 of his homeruns have been hit within the last four days, which means that five days ago, Ortiz was on pace for only 3 homeruns in 2009. He now has three, and it is only June 10th. But these numbers are irrelevant because you cannot predict figures for David Ortiz using single digit home run totals right??? Just not possible, right?? I mean c'mon! The guy was more clutch than a 1982 Hyundai Excel. The point that I am trying to make is that David Ortiz will progress throughout the summer.
I don't think that Air Papi has made his final landing. Although he had a terrible start to his season, he is in the midst of a 7 game hit streak, and has hit two homeruns in his last three games, doubling his season total. One of these homeruns came last night against the Yankees. In addition, in his last 7 games, he is batting .276 with 6 RBI's and 4 runs scored. Furthermore, he is probably in no danger of being taken out of the Boston lineup for lack of productivity, so that shouldn't be a worry.
On the other hand, there is always that possibility that I am totally wrong, and that Ortiz ends up batting .210 with 11 homers and 48 RBI's. However, based on his performance this week, and the offensive machines that surround him in that Boston lineup, I don't think that this will happen.
So, is David Ortiz a good buy-low candidate? I think the answer is yes. One of his biggest drawbacks is that he is only available in the DH slot, so if this is a problem for you, avoid him. I am certainly not saying that he is going to hit 50 homers and have 130 RBI's. So please don't mistake what I am driving at. However, if you are looking for some offense in the second half, it might be something to think about. Good Luck!
